Santa Cruz Vibes Magazine has been a long-term collaboration from the very beginning, growing alongside the publication as both its readership and editorial vision evolved.
A Platform Built to Evolve
Santa Cruz Vibes needed more than a place to publish articles. It needed a flexible digital home for local reporting, photography, print issues, and an expanding archive of stories from across Santa Cruz County.
We designed and developed a custom headless publishing platform that pairs WordPress with a Next.js frontend, giving the editorial team a familiar way to manage content while creating a fast, responsive experience for readers. The result was a foundation capable of supporting the magazine as its audience, content, and ideas continued to grow.

Discovering Local Stories
Built around the conventions of a modern digital publication, the website organized articles into searchable categories and archives, making it easy for readers to explore everything from local events and businesses to food, travel, music, and community stories. As the magazine grew, this editorial structure provided the foundation for continued expansion.

Every Story Told Differently
Great editorial design should support the story, not dictate it. Using a flexible page builder, editors can assemble custom layouts that accommodate everything from short community updates to immersive feature articles with photography, galleries, and rich media. The result is a publishing experience that remains consistent for readers while giving each story the space to unfold in its own way.

Every Issue, Online
Every print edition was given a permanent home online, allowing readers to revisit stories long after each issue left the newsstand. By connecting the magazine's physical and digital editions, the platform extended the life of every publication while making years of local journalism easy to explore.

Designing The Next Chapter
After several years of publishing local stories, Santa Cruz Vibes entered a new chapter with a refreshed visual identity across both print and digital. Rather than starting over, the redesign built upon the original foundation, introducing a cohesive editorial design system while preserving the publishing experience readers and editors had come to rely on.
A Familiar Foundation, Thoughtfully Reimagined

Discovering Local Stories, Reimagined
As Santa Cruz Vibes grew, so did the breadth of stories it published. The redesign introduced a unified editorial design system built around distinct category identities, giving every section of the magazine its own recognizable character.
Rather than relying on a single visual treatment across the entire publication, each editorial category was given its own visual identity. Readers immediately recognize where they are while the experience remains cohesive from one section to the next.

Designed Around the Story
While the original publishing platform gave editors the flexibility to tell every story differently, the redesign focused on how those stories were experienced. A refined editorial layout, immersive photography, thoughtful typography, and subtle glass interfaces create a reading experience that feels more like a modern magazine than a traditional news website.

Taking Ownership of the Archive
As the publication's archive continued to grow, maintaining long-term access became increasingly important. Rather than depending on a third-party publishing service with evolving pricing and usage limitations, we developed a custom PDF reading experience that preserved the familiar browsing experience while giving the magazine full ownership of its digital archive.
Built with React PDF and hosted alongside the rest of the publication, the new system integrates seamlessly into the website and can grow alongside the magazine without being constrained by an external platform.
The Services Behind This Work
Every project is shaped by a different combination of services. Santa Cruz Vibes brought together visual design, custom development, and thoughtful redesign to modernize a long-running publication while preserving the editorial workflow that made it successful. The result is a platform that feels familiar to longtime readers while providing a stronger foundation for the years ahead.
